Abstract

The objective of this project is to utilize fractal analysis in order to characterize surface roughness measurements of carbon steel mechanical cup ports (MCP) which are widely used on automotive pressure sensing industry in order to protect device electronic conditional modules. Fractal analysis techniques consists of using area scale measurements that helps to differentiate surface textures and behavior created during the life of a product. This type of analysis will be used to differentiate surface roughness on MCP with different type of plating or also called chromate conversion coatings (Clear blue trivalent chromate, Hexavalent chromate), help to properly compare plated MCP against a MCP with not plating, and see if it is able to characterize surface roughness performance after a plated MCP is subjected to a coolant testing to simulate sensor application. Prior to doing this measurements, two 3D laser Profiler equipment will be tested to see which one is able to give more reliable area scale analysis results.

1. Introduction

Surface metrology is important in helping differentiate surface textures and behavior created in different conditions as consequence of a series of events during the life of a product (e.g ...
